Tau Nu Omega Chapter

History

In January 1991, a seed was sewn in the spirit of sisterhood and service. At the heart of this seed was a vision and desire to bridge a gap in the Bronx by reaching into under-served areas, providing services that empower the people, and improving the quality of life for the members of the South Bronx community. From that vision and desire, the Bronx Executive Pearls Interest Group was formed.

The Bronx Executive Pearls Interest Group "the Group" consisted of several members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® of varied ages, experiences, and professional disciplines.  Of note, the Group was comprised of many Alpha Kappa Alpha women who had been inactive for twenty-five years or more but desired to reconnect with the Sorority and the community.

The first project undertaken by the Bronx Executive Pearls Interest Group was a program entitled "Grouping for Success".  The program was designed to provide academic tutorial sessions and fine arts to elementary school students while developing character, self-esteem, and positive self-image.

The Group also lent its professional expertise to other initiatives, such as:

  1. the creation of an arts camp for at-risk youth who were incarcerated at the Spofford Juvenile Detention Center
  2. the Aegeis Shelter for Battered Women, providing career counseling and remembering them with gift bags on various holidays throughout the year, particularly on Mothers' Day
  3. health and human services projects like the March of Dimes Walk-A-Thon

After eighteen months of recognized community service to the South Bronx community, the Bronx Executive Pearls Interest Group became chartered as the Tau Nu Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® on June 13, 1992.

Today, Tau Nu Omega continues to expand on the vision of that first group.
